eMLB 04-18-2016 Home | | | Breaking News | | Monday, April 18th, 2016: Mets Muscle Past Marlins to Begin Season The New York Mets kicked off the 2016 season in grand style as they faced the Florida Marlins in Pro Player Stadium for a three game set. Expectations are running high for the Gotham bunch as they look to erase the stinging sweep at the hands of the San Fransisco Giants in the opening round of last season's playoffs.
If the opening game is any indication, there is not a hangover for the Mets as they routed the Marlins 12-2 behind the clutch hitting of Kevin Youkilis and a couple of offseason acquisitions Eddie English and Gary Johnson. Bris Alston looked to be in mid season form as he pitched a solid 7.2 innings allowing only one earned run. The game was scoreless for the first two innings but then the Mets exploded in inning 3-6, scoring a total of ten runs in those four innings. Eddie Johnson, who had played the last seven years in Florida and was signed to a two year deal in the offseason, broke open the scoreless tie with a mammoth blast to right field and the Mets never relinquished the lead. Kevin Youkilis, Ryan Garko and Mike Jacobs contributed to the home run parade.
The Mets scrambled to fill the second base position before the game with waiver wire claim Allyn Brocail which had many Met fans shaking their head. Brocail was solid with one single and two rbis in three at bats and after the game the fans questions were answered as a trade between the Mets and Braves was announced. New York sends the disgruntled Tony Sawyer in exchange for Atlanta's 2016 4th and 5th round draft picks. | | Monday, April 18th, 2016: Mariners Pound A's in Easy Win The Seattle Mariners racked up 17 hits against Oakland pitchers Denny Stark (0-1) and Fred Cochrane to cruise to an easy 9-1 victory. The win improves the Mariners' record to 3-2 on the season while the A's are still looking for their first victory at 0-5. Allan Wagner (1-0) pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits. Gustavo Wilhelm pitched 4 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season, which is his 3rd career save.
Rookie Seattle catcher Justin Towles had a big day, going 3-5 with 2 runs driven in. But his defense was just as impressive, gunning out all 3 attempted base stealers and starting an inning-ending double play. Mariner 2B Henry Gonzalez also had 3 hits in the lopsided win.
"This is frustrating", Oakland manager Buddy Bell said after the game. "We were outclassed from the opening pitch by those guys. The way we are playing is baffling. I never saw this coming, especially with the way we were swinging the bats at the end of spring training.
"And it looks like our pitchers are pitching batting practice at times out there." | | Monday, April 18th, 2016: Mariners Top A's in 14 Seattle reliever Ray Smith struck out Luis Terrero with the tying run on third and the winning run on second in the bottom of the 14th inning to take game 1 of their series against the Oakland Athletics, 6-5. The M's scored 2 runs in the top half of the 14th off Oakland reliever Charlie Worthington (0-1), but had to sweat out the bottom half of the inning after Smith allowed a run on 2 hits and a walk.
"We did a great job fighting back to tie the game", A's manager Buddy Bell said after their 4th consecutive loss to open the 2016 season. "We squandered way too many opportunites though, and should have come away with a W. We seem to be finding new ways to lose games."
Seattle starter Hal Kellogg was very impressive early. He had a no-hitter going into the 7th and was in complete control of the game, before fatiguing in the 7th. He eventually allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, surrendering his team's 4-0 lead in the 8th on a Pepe Clarke RBI single.
Seattle OF Todd Donovan went 4-6 on the day, including a mammoth 2-run homer in the 7th. | | | | | Yesterday's Games | | American League | | Away Team | Home Team | Result | Time | Winning Pitcher | Losing Pitcher | | New York (A) | Boston | 10-12 | 1:05 pm | J.Watson (2-1, 9.00 ERA) | M.McBride (1-1, 7.43 ERA) | | Chicago (A) | Tampa Bay | 0-3 | 6:05 pm | C.Williams (1-2, 4.12 ERA) | S.Vaughan (1-2, 5.60 ERA) | | Baltimore | Toronto | 0-5 | 1:05 pm | M.Prior (3-0, 3.98 ERA) | A.Bolivar (0-3, 5.49 ERA) | | Detroit | Cleveland | 5-11 | 1:05 pm | R.Oswalt (1-2, 4.29 ERA) | R.Stahl (0-2, 6.87 ERA) | | Kansas City | Minnesota | 1-6 | 7:05 pm | S.Olsen (3-0, 2.95 ERA) | B.Madritsch (2-1, 3.09 ERA) | | Oakland | Los Angeles (A) | 10-4 | 10:05 pm | N.Lopez (1-2, 7.58 ERA) | H.Guillen (0-2, 9.87 ERA) | | Texas | Seattle | 7-15 | 10:05 pm | J.King (2-1, 6.32 ERA) | K.Lohse (2-1, 5.09 ERA) | | National League | | Away Team | Home Team | Result | Time | Winning Pitcher | Losing Pitcher | | Florida | Atlanta | 17-8 | 7:05 pm | M.Belisle (2-0, 6.23 ERA) | G.Reed (1-2, 8.80 ERA) | | Pittsburgh | Philadelphia | 2-5 | 1:05 pm | G.Power (1-2, 4.66 ERA) | J.Papelbon (1-1, 3.48 ERA) | | New York (N) | Washington | 3-5 | 1:05 pm | R.Wagner (1-0, 1.64 ERA) | F.German (1-1, 3.38 ERA) | | Cincinnati | Chicago (N) | 3-0 | 2:05 pm | C.Villalobos (1-2, 4.15 ERA) | L.O'Brien (1-1, 2.79 ERA) | | Milwaukee | Houston | 2-16 | 7:05 pm | G.Hopper (1-0, 1.80 ERA) | E.Horton (1-2, 8.44 ERA) | | Colorado | St. Louis | 3-4 | 2:05 pm | P.Gomez (1-1, 2.35 ERA) | M.Jones (0-1, 6.52 ERA) | | Arizona | San Diego | 3-10 | 10:05 pm | J.McMillan (2-0, 1.90 ERA) | J.Sutherland (0-2, 11.05 ERA) | | Los Angeles (N) | San Francisco | 5-6 | 4:05 pm | B.McClure (1-1, 4.50 ERA) | J.Bell (1-2, 4.50 ERA) | | | Today's Games | | American League | | Away Team | Home Team | Time | Starting Pitcher Away Team | Starting Pitcher Home Team | | New York (A) (7-5, Road: 3-3) | Boston (8-4, Home: 6-2) | 1:05 pm | RHP R.Burke (0-1, 17.18 ERA) | RHP T.Wakefield (1-1, 5.93 ERA) | | Chicago (A) (6-5, Road: 3-5) | Tampa Bay (3-8, Home: 3-6) | 1:05 pm | RHP T.Patterson (1-1, 5.40 ERA) | RHP T.Springer (1-1, 3.86 ERA) | | Baltimore (4-8, Road: 2-6) | Toronto (8-3, Home: 4-1) | 1:05 pm | RHP D.Gamble (1-1, 2.93 ERA) | RHP D.Pratt (2-0, 3.07 ERA) | | Detroit (2-9, Road: 1-4) | Cleveland (5-7, Home: 3-2) | 1:05 pm | RHP R.Smith (0-2, 10.61 ERA) | RHP D.Matsuzaka (0-2, 4.73 ERA) | | Kansas City (5-6, Road: 1-4) | Minnesota (9-2, Home: 4-1) | 2:05 pm | RHP D.Stevens (0-1, 3.29 ERA) | LHP J.Stephens (2-0, 1.80 ERA) | | Oakland (2-9, Road: 2-3) | Los Angeles (A) (5-7, Home: 2-3) | 9:05 pm | RHP B.Myers (1-1, 7.11 ERA) | RHP T.Daniels (2-0, 2.08 ERA) | | Texas (8-4, Road: 3-2) | Seattle (8-3, Home: 3-2) | 4:05 pm | RHP J.Alvarez (1-0, 1.20 ERA) | RHP J.Jennings (0-1, 12.27 ERA) | | National League | | Away Team | Home Team | Time | Starting Pitcher Away Team | Starting Pitcher Home Team | | Florida (7-4, Road: 3-2) | Atlanta (4-7, Home: 3-5) | 1:05 pm | RHP E.Donahue (0-0, 1.29 ERA) | RHP R.Perry (0-0, 1.98 ERA) | | Pittsburgh (5-6, Road: 2-6) | Philadelphia (5-6, Home: 4-1) | 1:05 pm | RHP A.Lugar (1-1, 3.18 ERA) | RHP A.Wainwright (1-0, 1.06 ERA) | | New York (N) (7-4, Road: 2-3) | Washington (3-8, Home: 3-2) | 1:05 pm | LHP J.Rheinecker (1-0, 3.07 ERA) | RHP S.Green (0-2, 15.96 ERA) | | Cincinnati (6-5, Road: 4-1) | Chicago (N) (7-4, Home: 3-2) | 2:05 pm | RHP J.Dickson (1-1, 2.51 ERA) | RHP B.Dowd (1-0, 2.57 ERA) | | Milwaukee (5-8, Road: 2-8) | Houston (7-5, Home: 4-2) | 2:05 pm | LHP O.Perez (1-1, 3.29 ERA) | LHP M.Harrison (1-1, 5.54 ERA) | | Colorado (5-6, Road: 4-4) | St. Louis (6-6, Home: 5-4) | 2:05 pm | RHP F.Carmona (0-2, 5.91 ERA) | RHP J.Verlander (0-1, 18.00 ERA) | | Arizona (7-4, Road: 3-2) | San Diego (6-5, Home: 4-4) | 4:05 pm | RHP A.Sanchez (1-0, 4.05 ERA) | RHP M.Bates (0-0, 9.90 ERA) | | Los Angeles (N) (5-6, Road: 3-2) | San Francisco (5-6, Home: 2-3) | 4:05 pm | RHP O.Knight (0-0, 7.43 ERA) | LHP J.Gobble (1-1, 7.59 ERA) | | |
