18-year-old Shurron Kerly made a few Nippon headlines during this past week as the rookie first baseman proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Eastern League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.
He cracked 11 hits in 22 at-bats to put up a .500 average. Kerly collected no home runs, 5 RBIs and scored 4 runs.
This season Kerly is hitting at a .358 pace with 1 home run, 19 RBIs and has scored 21 times. |

Yoshio Akimoto has made fans throughout Nippon Baseball Ni-Gun League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 4-2 record. No pitcher in the Western League threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.
In 6 starts Akimoto compiled a 2.36 ERA, putting up a 4-2 record, striking out 45 and tossing 45.2 innings.
So far this year Akimoto has compiled a 7-2 record with a 2.32 ERA. |
