The 35-year-old Phillies shortstop compiled a .536 average (15-28), 2 home runs and 8 RBIs.
Velarde is hitting .309 for the season with 5 home runs, 19 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He has 38 hits in 123 at-bats and played in 29 games. |

Monday, May 4th, 1998: At the age of 27, Brian Giles might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Cleveland left fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .520 batting average. For his efforts Giles collected the American Player of the Week Award.
He racked up 13 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run and 7 RBIs last week in 7 games.
Currently Giles is batting .299 with 3 home runs and 14 RBIs. |

Sunday, May 3rd, 1998: Tony Gwynn of the San Francisco Giants extended his hitting string to 20 straight games with 2 hits in today's 5-3 triumph over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
Tony Gwynn struck out in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th and flied out in the 9th.
This year Gwynn is hitting .318 with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .343 clip and scored 14 runs. |
